Jan Pieter Heije prijs
Jan Pieter Heije (1809-1876) was a seminal figure in Dutch cultural life of the nineteenth century. Working in daily life as a doctor of medicine, throughout his career he labored passionately for the cultural and intellectual recognition of music and poetry in his native land. Among his many activities, he was a Board member of the renowned Maatschappij ter Bevordering der Toonkunst (Society for the Advancement of Music). As such, he became the driving force behind the founding of the Vereeniging voor (Noord-)Nederlandsche Muziekgeschiedenis (Society for Music History of The [Northern] Low Countries) in 1868, the current KVNM. In 1996 the Maatschappij tot Bevordering der Toonkunst and the KVNM jointly instituted the Jan Pieter Heije Prize to honor his memory and to recognize and promote outstanding musicological research in or about The Netherlands and the Low Countries, conducted by a young scholar at the beginning of her/his career.

The KVNM (Royal Society for Music History of The Netherlands) invites recently graduated Ph.D. students to submit their doctoral dissertation for consideration for the Jan Pieter Heije Prize. The prize is open to persons of any nationality. The winning research project will be written in Dutch, English, French or German. It shall consider a subject related to music in the Low Countries (broadly understood) and/or the author will have graduated from an accredited Dutch university. The jury will consist of a diverse panel of internationally renowned music scholars and will be searching for pioneering, path-breaking work.
The winner will be invited to present a formal (keynote-style) lecture on aspects of her/his research in conjunction with the award ceremony, which will take place at the occasion of the Annual Meeting of the Society in spring 2013. The winning thesis will be eligible for a publication subsidy by the KVNM. Dissertations must have been successfully defended between 15 November 2009 and 14 November 2012.
